Yes, you can get 25mm ply: it is a standard heavy thickness for tabletops, shelving, stair treads and platforms. A 1220 × 2440 mm sheet of 25 mm plywood weighs about 37.2 kg on a Styrax core and 48.4 kg on eucalyptus. Minh Thanh Plywood presses it, like every thickness from 3 to 40 mm, on 1220 × 2440 and 1250 × 2500 mm sheets. This guide covers the build, pressing, weight, uses and the order line.
Can you get 25mm plywood?
Yes, 25mm plywood is a standard heavy thickness, and most export mills press it to order. At Minh Thanh Plywood we press 25 mm, like every thickness from 3 to 40 mm, on 1220 × 2440 mm (8x4) and 1250 × 2500 mm sheets.
| 25 mm plywood at a glance | Value |
|---|---|
| Sheet sizes | 1220 × 2440 mm, 1250 × 2500 mm; custom such as 1220 × 2500 mm |
| Cut sizes on request | half sheet 1220 × 1220 mm, strip 2440 × 610 mm, quarter 1220 × 610 mm |
| Volume per 1220 × 2440 mm sheet | 0.0744 m³ |
| Weight, Styrax / acacia / eucalyptus core | 37.2 / 43.2 / 48.4 kg |
| Thickness tolerance | ±0.2–0.3 mm sanded furniture; ±0.5 mm commercial |
| Pressing for furniture grade | Double pressed |
| Sheets per 40HC, Styrax core | 720 |
Retail yards stock 25 mm less often than 18 mm, which is why buyers in smaller markets ask whether it exists. For a container order it is a normal line, and it can share a 40HC with other thicknesses by agreement.
Plywood 24mm, 25 mm, 28 mm and 1 inch: which thickness is which?
Plywood 24mm, 25 mm and 28 mm are three metric thicknesses close to the imperial 1 inch and 1-1/8 inch panels. Pick the one your hardware and drawings expect, and write it in millimetres.
| Thickness | Imperial match | Sheet volume, 1220 × 2440 mm | Weight at 500 / 580 / 650 kg/m³ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 mm | about 15/16 in | 0.0714 m³ | 35.7 / 41.4 / 46.4 kg |
| 25 mm | 1 in = 25.4 mm | 0.0744 m³ | 37.2 / 43.2 / 48.4 kg |
| 28 mm | 1-1/8 in = 28.6 mm | 0.0834 m³ | 41.7 / 48.3 / 54.2 kg |
The inch is exactly 25.4 mm (NIST). A 25 mm sheet is therefore 0.4 mm under one inch. 28 mm is the metric answer to the 1-1/8 inch subfloor and trailer panels used in North America. All three are inside our 3–40 mm range, so the choice follows your hardware, not the mill.
How is a 25mm ply board built?
A 25mm ply board is a stack of cross-laid veneers: a thin face and back, and a core of many thicker veneers with the grain alternating at right angles, always an odd number of plies so the panel stays balanced.
Face veneers are typically 0.2–0.5 mm, and core veneers 1.4–2.0 mm. Under two faces, a 25 mm panel therefore needs roughly 13 to 17 core veneers, depending on their thickness. More, thinner veneers give a more even core and better screw holding; fewer, thicker veneers cost less.
At Minh Thanh, furniture panels are built on white Styrax or eucalyptus cores, with acacia and pine cores on order. Core layers are stitched both horizontally and vertically, so veneers cannot open or overlap in the press. Ask for the ply count on the quote and count it on the first sample.

Single-pressed or double-pressed 25 mm plywood?
Double-pressed 25 mm plywood is flatter and more even than single-pressed, and the difference grows with thickness. Our furniture-grade panels are pressed twice as standard.
| Build step | Single pressed | Double pressed |
|---|---|---|
| Lay-up | Core and faces laid up together | Core board laid up first |
| First press | Whole panel pressed once | Core board pressed |
| Calibration | Sanded after pressing | Core board calibrated to thickness |
| Second press | — | Face and back pressed onto the calibrated core |
| Result | Core gaps can show through the face; thickness varies more | Flat face, even thickness, ±0.2–0.3 mm after sanding |
| Typical use | Packing, construction, hidden parts | Furniture, tabletops, visible panels |
On a thick panel, any unevenness in the core shows through a thin face as ripples or hollows. Calibrating the core before the faces go on removes that, which is why buyers of tabletops and lacquered furniture specify double pressing.

How heavy is a 25mm sheet of plywood?
A 25 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm weighs about 37.2 kg on a Styrax core, 43.2 kg on acacia and 48.4 kg on eucalyptus. The weight is the sheet volume, 0.0744 m³, times the panel density.
| Sheet | Volume | Styrax core (500 kg/m³) | Acacia core (580 kg/m³) | Eucalyptus core (650 kg/m³) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1220 × 2440 × 25 mm | 0.0744 m³ | 37.2 kg (82.0 lb) | 43.2 kg (95.2 lb) | 48.4 kg (106.6 lb) |
| 1250 × 2500 × 25 mm | 0.0781 m³ | 39.1 kg (86.1 lb) | 45.3 kg (99.9 lb) | 50.8 kg (112.0 lb) |
These densities are reference values; eucalyptus panels can run up to 750 kg/m³. At this thickness the core choice changes the weight by more than 11 kg a sheet, which matters for handling, for wall-hung furniture and for how many sheets fit under the container weight limit. Many European furniture buyers choose Styrax for that reason. Our plywood weight calculator works out other sizes.

What is a 25mm ply board used for?
A 25mm ply board is used where a part must carry load over a span or take screws close to the edge. Typical uses:
- Tabletops, desks and worktops, often with a solid-wood lipping or edge banding.
- Heavy shelving in libraries, stores and garages, where 18 mm would sag.
- Stair treads and landings, indoors with interior glue, outdoors with an exterior bond.
- Workbenches and machine tables.
- Stage, exhibition and display platforms.
- Vehicle floors and heavy crate bases.
For furniture, the face is chosen for the look: EV, poplar, birch, okoume, pine and others. For hidden or structural parts, a commercial face on a sound core costs less and does the same job.
Which core and glue suit 25 mm plywood?
Choose the core by weight and face quality, and the glue by where the panel will live. For interior furniture, a Styrax core with UF glue at E0 emission is our standard; for outdoor parts, a melamine-fortified or phenolic (WBP) bond.
| Use | Core | Glue and emission |
|---|---|---|
| Tabletops and visible furniture | Styrax, light and pale | UF glue at E0 emission |
| Heavy shelving, workbenches | Eucalyptus, harder and heavier | UF glue at E0 emission |
| Stair treads and outdoor parts | Eucalyptus or acacia | Melamine-fortified or phenolic (WBP) |
| Crate bases and hidden parts | Acacia or eucalyptus | Interior glue to the buyer’s spec |
Buyers in the UK and Europe also name the class: EN 636-2 (plywood for humid conditions, Use Class 2) with an EN 314-2 Class 2 bond is the usual label for 25 mm hardwood plywood sold for joinery, and EN 314-2 Class 3 with EN 636-3 is the exterior one.
UK shop listings show the same labels: The Good Sheet sells a 25 mm structural sheet as EN 636-2 / Use Class 2 with an EN 314-2 Class 2 bond, EN 12871 and E1, and B&Q lists Arranwood 25 mm as EN 636-2. Write the EN class on the order and we press to the glue it names; third-party testing to your method (for example EN 717-1) is arranged through SGS on request. (The Good Sheet, 25 mm structural plywood, checked on 21 October 2026)
Glue type and emission class are two separate lines on the order. Our CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification, ICTT mill no. 23024, covers veneer-core hardwood plywood from 3 to 50 mm, so 25 mm panels are inside its scope; see our CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI page.
For the regulatory requirements, see CARB’s composite wood products program and EPA’s TSCA Title VI guidance.
What thickness tolerance should 25 mm plywood have?
Sanded furniture panels of 25 mm hold ±0.2–0.3 mm, down to ±0.2 mm; commercial panels hold ±0.5 mm. Length and width hold ±2 mm.
Tolerance matters more at 25 mm than it looks. Hinges, connectors and edge-banding machines are set to one thickness, and a CNC program that pockets to a fixed depth needs a flat, even sheet. A sheet that arrives at 24.3 mm on a 25 mm order also holds 2.8% less wood than you paid for. Measure samples with a caliper at the corners and mid-edges, and write the tolerance next to the thickness on the order.
How many 25 mm plywood sheets fit in a 40HC container?
A 40HC carries 720 sheets of 25 mm plywood on a Styrax core: 18 packs of 40 sheets, about 53.6 m³. Heavier cores reach the weight limit sooner.
| Core | Sheets per pack | Packs | Sheets per 40HC | Volume | Panel weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Styrax | 40 | 18 | 720 | 53.58 m³ | 26,791 kg |
| Acacia | 40 | 16 | 640 | 47.63 m³ | 27,625 kg |
| Eucalyptus | 38 | 15 | 570 | 42.42 m³ | 27,573 kg |
Packs are about 1,000 mm high and the planning payload is 28,000 kg unless the booking is lower. Sea time from Hai Phong is 30–40 days to Northern Europe, 25–35 days to the Mediterranean and 15–25 days to the Middle East, by carrier and route. Every shipment is photographed and filmed before loading, and you receive the photos and video.

Is 25 mm marine plywood the same as 25 mm exterior plywood?
No. Marine plywood is built to a marine standard such as BS 1088, with selected durable species and a boil-proof bond, and it is sold for boat hulls and permanently wet use. Exterior plywood with a phenolic (WBP) bond suits stair treads, sheathing and outdoor parts, not hull planking.
Buyers looking for 25 mm marine plywood for boat building should buy certified BS 1088 panels from a marine plywood stockist and check the stamp on each sheet. For outdoor furniture, steps and platforms, our exterior panels with melamine-fortified or phenolic (WBP) glue are the cost-effective choice; see our exterior plywood page.
Is one 25 mm sheet better than two thinner sheets glued together?
For most parts, yes. A 25 mm sheet pressed as one panel is flatter, has no glue line to fail in the middle and costs less labour than laminating two thinner sheets on site.
Laminating two sheets, for example 12 + 12 mm, still has its place: when the outer face must differ from the inner one, when a curved part is built up in layers, or when only thinner stock is on hand. For flat tabletops, shelves and treads, order the full thickness and save the gluing, pressing and the risk of a delaminated joint. Our 18 mm plywood guide covers the lighter option when 25 mm is more than the part needs.
When do you need 25 mm instead of 18 mm?
Choose 25 mm when the part spans further, carries more load or takes screws close to its edge than 18 mm can handle; otherwise 18 mm does the job with less weight and freight. A 25 mm sheet holds 1.39 times the wood of an 18 mm sheet, and that extra wood is worth paying for only where the part uses it.
| Part | 18 mm is enough when | Choose 25 mm when |
|---|---|---|
| Shelf | Short spans, light loads | Long spans, books, tools, stock |
| Tabletop | Framed underneath, small table | Large top on few legs, heavy use |
| Stair tread | Supported on close stringers | Wider treads, outdoor steps |
| Worktop | Covered with a thick laminate on a frame | Exposed ply edge, solid feel |
| Platform or floor | Joists close together | Wider joist spacing, point loads |
Weight decides the rest. On a Styrax core, a 25 mm sheet weighs 37.2 kg against 26.8 kg at 18 mm, and a 40HC carries 720 sheets against 990. If a cabinet or wall unit must stay light, 18 mm with a frame or edge stiffener is often the better design.

How much does 25 mm plywood cost per sheet?
A 25 mm plywood sheet costs the price per cubic metre times 0.0744 m³. At our starting prices of US$350/m³ for furniture plywood and US$250/m³ for commercial plywood (FOB Hai Phong, October 2026), that is about US$26.05 and US$18.61 of panel per sheet. These are raw FOB panel values per sheet, before freight, duty, VAT and the importer’s margin.
| 1220 × 2440 × 25 mm sheet, 0.0744 m³ | US$ per m³ | US$ per sheet | GBP per sheet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial plywood, FOB Hai Phong | 250 | 18.61 | about £13.9 |
| Furniture plywood, FOB Hai Phong | 350 | 26.05 | about £19.5 |
The pound figures use US$1.3345 to £1 (mid-market rate, exchangerates.org.uk, 20 October 2026). The sheet volume cancels out of every comparison, so the same ratio holds for any size.
What does 25 mm plywood cost in UK shops?
A UK shopper pays, VAT at 20% included, about £51 per m² for a 25 mm hardwood board cut to 1220 × 915 mm and up to about £170 per m² for a 500 × 250 mm offcut, against about £6.6 per m² of panel at our furniture FOB price. These are B&Q shelf prices, checked on 21 October 2026.
| B&Q 25 mm board (Sylkbuild) | Price incl. VAT | Per m² |
|---|---|---|
| 1220 × 915 mm hardwood plywood | £57.10 | about £51 |
| 1000 × 250 mm hardwood plywood | £31.20 | about £125 |
| 500 × 250 mm hardwood plywood | £21.20 | about £170 |
| 610 × 610 mm marine plywood | £44.20 | about £119 |
Small cut boards carry the retailer’s cutting, handling and VAT, which is why a contractor, joiner or stockist who buys full 1220 × 2440 mm sheets by the pack saves so much.
B&Q sells the same panel as a pack of three 2440 × 1220 mm structural hardwood sheets and as 2440 × 610 mm half-width strips, so UK yards already stock these sizes. Ply Direct, a UK cut-to-size supplier, charges a flat £25 + VAT for delivery in England and Wales and delivers free over £500 (Ply Direct, checked on 21 October 2026). A container buyer cuts the same panel to 2440 × 610, 1220 × 610 and 1220 × 915 mm in the yard and keeps the margin.
What does a UK importer pay in duty and VAT?
A UK importer pays 0% customs duty on Vietnamese plywood of heading 4412 under the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, against 6% for most hardwood-faced plywood and 10% for tropical-faced plywood without a preference. VAT is 20% on import, and a VAT-registered buyer reclaims it. The figures are from the UK Trade Tariff, commodity 4412339090, checked on 21 October 2026. Claim the preference with an origin declaration or certificate from the factory, and confirm the 10-digit code with your broker.
Per sheet, 25 mm costs a little more than its volume suggests, because thick panels press longer and fill the container weight limit with fewer sheets: each 25 mm Styrax-core sheet carries 1.375 times the freight of an 18 mm sheet. Our guide to plywood price by thickness explains the full comparison.
What should you write on an order for 25 mm plywood?
Write the thickness with its tolerance, the size, the core, the pressing, the glue and the face, so every mill quotes the same 25mm ply.
Our standard 25 mm furniture line reads:
Furniture plywood 25 mm ±0.2 mm, 1220 × 2440 mm, Styrax core stitched, double pressed, UF glue at E0 emission, EV face A/A sanded both sides, UV-ready, 40 sheets per pack, 18 packs per 40HC, FOB Hai Phong.
Send it through the furniture plywood page or to contact@minhthanhplywood.com. You get a written quote within hours, and samples are free. Our plywood thickness guide helps if you are still choosing between 18, 21 and 25 mm.
Buyer questions, answered
What import duty applies to Vietnamese 25 mm plywood in the UK?
0% under the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement for plywood of heading 4412, against 6% for most hardwood-faced plywood without a preference; VAT is 20% (UK Trade Tariff, 21 October 2026).
Can you get 25mm plywood?
Yes. 25 mm is a standard heavy plywood thickness. Minh Thanh presses it on 1220 × 2440 and 1250 × 2500 mm sheets, with Styrax or eucalyptus cores as standard and the face your parts need.
How heavy is a 25mm sheet of plywood?
A 1220 × 2440 × 25 mm sheet holds 0.0744 m³, so it weighs about 37.2 kg on a Styrax core, 43.2 kg on acacia and 48.4 kg on eucalyptus. A 1250 × 2500 mm sheet weighs about 39.1, 45.3 and 50.8 kg.
Is 25 mm plywood the same as 1 inch?
Nearly. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm, so 25 mm plywood is 0.4 mm thinner. In practice 25 mm is the metric sheet sold where an inch-thick panel is asked for.
What is 25mm ply used for?
Tabletops, desks and worktops, heavy shelving, stair treads, workbenches, stage and display platforms, vehicle floors and heavy crate bases. Exterior uses need a phenolic (WBP) or melamine-fortified bond.
How many plies does 25 mm plywood have?
It depends on the core veneer thickness. With core veneers of 1.4–2.0 mm under two thin faces, a 25 mm panel needs roughly 13 to 17 core veneers. Ask for the ply count on the quote and count it on the sample.
What is the difference between single-pressed and double-pressed 25 mm plywood?
A single-pressed panel is laid up and pressed once. A double-pressed panel has its core board pressed and calibrated first, then the face and back are pressed on, which gives a flatter sheet with even thickness and a cleaner face.
How many 25 mm plywood sheets fit in a 40HC container?
On 1220 × 2440 mm sheets, 720 on a Styrax core (18 packs of 40), 640 on acacia (16 of 40) and 570 on eucalyptus (15 of 38), within a 28,000 kg planning payload.
Is 25 mm marine plywood the same as 25 mm exterior plywood?
No. Marine plywood is built to a marine standard such as BS 1088 for boats and permanently wet use. Exterior plywood with phenolic (WBP) glue suits stair treads, sheathing and outdoor parts, not hull planking.
What thickness tolerance should 25 mm plywood have?
Sanded furniture panels hold ±0.2–0.3 mm, down to ±0.2 mm, and commercial panels ±0.5 mm. Write the tolerance next to the thickness on the order.
How much does 25 mm plywood cost per sheet?
A 1220 × 2440 × 25 mm sheet holds 0.0744 m³. At our starting prices of US$350/m³ for furniture and US$250/m³ for commercial plywood (FOB, October 2026), that is about US$26.05 and US$18.61 of panel per sheet.
