What is white oak plywood?

White oak plywood is a panel made of a thin white oak face veneer bonded over a core of wood veneers, MDF or a combination of both. The face gives the look of solid white oak; the core gives the flatness, stability and screw holding.

White oak (Quercus alba) grows in the eastern United States and Canada. Its heartwood is light to mid brown, often with an olive cast, and its pores are filled with tyloses. That closed structure is why white oak was used for barrels and why it takes water better than red oak.

Four choices define a white oak veneer plywood panel: the cut of the face, the face and back grade, the core and the size. Each section below takes one of them. The hardwood veneered plywood guide covers the same choices for every face species.

White oak vs red oak plywood: how do the faces differ?

White oak and red oak plywood differ in colour, pore structure and figure, and buyers notice all three in a finished cabinet. The table compares the two faces on the points that change a specification.

Point White oak Red oak
Species Quercus alba Quercus rubra
Colour Light to mid brown, olive cast Pinkish-red to light brown
Pores Closed (tyloses) Open
Ray fleck when quartered Long, strong flake Short, smaller flake
Water behaviour of the wood Better Lower
Under clear finish Cool brown Warm, pink tone
Typical design use Modern and Scandinavian interiors Traditional cabinets and trim

Choose white oak for a cool, even brown or for strong ray fleck. Choose red oak for a warmer tone or a traditional look. Our red oak plywood guide covers that face in full.

Rift, quarter or plain-sliced white oak: which cut should you specify?

Specify rift-cut white oak for straight, even grain, quarter-sliced for ray fleck, and plain-sliced for the cathedral pattern. The cut changes the look, the yield from the log and the price.

Cut How the veneer is sliced Look Relative price
Plain-sliced (flat cut) Parallel to the log’s centre line Cathedral arches and straight grain Lowest
Quarter-sliced Radially, across the growth rings Straight grain with ray fleck Higher
Rift-cut At an angle to the rays Straight, tight grain, little or no fleck Highest
Rotary-cut Peeled around the log Wide, wild grain Lowest; seldom used on oak faces

Rift sawn white oak plywood is the most asked-for face in modern cabinetry, because the grain stays straight across a run of doors. Quarter-sliced white oak suits pieces where the fleck is the feature. Plain-sliced suits budget runs and painted carcass interiors.

Matching also matters. Book-matched leaves mirror each other; slip-matched leaves repeat side by side. Write the match on the order with the cut.

White oak plywood grades: what do A1, A2 and B2 mean?

A white oak plywood grade has two parts: a letter for the face and a number for the back. A1 means an A-grade face over a grade 1 back; B2 means a B-grade face over a grade 2 back. These are the North American hardwood plywood grades, set by the ANSI/HPVA HP-1 standard.

Grade Face or back What it allows
AA Face Best appearance; few, small natural marks
A Face Matched leaves, small marks; the standard cabinet face
B Face More colour variation and small repairs; good for stained parts
C to E Face Repairs and defects; utility and paint-grade use
1 Back The cleanest back: small sound knots and natural colour variation
2 Back Larger sound knots and neat repairs
3 to 4 Back Reject back; hidden faces only, most often on 1/4 in panels

A1 is the common grade for both-sides-visible cabinet parts. A2 and B2 suit parts where the back is seen less often. For a mill outside North America, send the grade with an approved sample, because the sample fixes the look both sides agree on.

Which core suits white oak plywood: veneer, MDF or combi?

A veneer core gives the lightest, strongest panel with the best screw holding; an MDF core gives the flattest surface; a combination core sits between them. The core decides the weight, the stiffness and how the edge machines.

Core Build Best for Watch for
Veneer core Cross-laid hardwood veneers Cabinet boxes, shelves, screw joints Core quality decides flatness
MDF core Fibreboard with oak faces Flat doors, panelling, CNC parts Heavier, weaker screw holding at the edge
Combination (combi) Veneer centre, MDF or HDF under the faces Flat face with veneer-core strength Ask how many MDF layers

On a veneer core, the core timber also sets the weight. In Minh Thanh’s furniture builds an 18 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm weighs about 26.8 kg on white Styrax core and about 34.8 kg on Eucalyptus core. Styrax keeps a cabinet light; Eucalyptus gives a stiffer, denser shelf.

Our furniture cores are stitched across and along the grain, then pressed and calibrated before the face and back go on. That second pressing keeps a thin oak face flat over the core.

White oak plywood 4x8 sizes and thicknesses: 1/4 to 3/4 inch

White oak plywood 4x8 sheets are sold in four common thicknesses: 1/4, 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 inch. Export mills make the metric equivalents on 1220 × 2440 mm sheets, so check the actual thickness against your joinery.

Nominal Exact inch value Nearest metric panel Typical use
White oak plywood 1/4 6.35 mm 6 mm Cabinet backs, panelling, drawer bottoms
1/2 in 12.7 mm 12 mm Drawer boxes, light shelves
5/8 in 15.875 mm 15 or 16 mm Doors, furniture parts
3/4 white oak plywood 19.05 mm 18 mm Cabinet boxes, shelves, tops

A metric 18 mm panel is about 1 mm thinner than a true 3/4 in. Dados and hinge settings cut for 19 mm need to be reset. Minh Thanh’s sanded furniture panels hold ±0.2–0.3 mm thickness, down to ±0.2 mm, and length and width within ±2 mm. Sizes are 1220 × 2440 and 1250 × 2500 mm, with custom sizes such as 1220 × 2500 mm.

White oak plywood: quarter inch 6.35 mm versus 6 mm; three-quarter inch 19.05 mm versus 18 mm

What is white oak plywood used for?

White oak plywood is used for kitchen and bath cabinets, built-in furniture, shelving, wall panelling, interior doors and store fixtures. The cut and grade follow the part.

  • White oak plywood cabinets: rift A1 for doors and visible ends, plain-sliced A2 or B2 for boxes.
  • Furniture: quarter-sliced for feature pieces, rift for clean modern lines.
  • Wall panelling: sequence-matched rift or quarter faces across a wall.
  • Shelving: veneer core at 3/4 in or 18 mm for spans; Eucalyptus core for heavy loads.
  • Doors and fixtures: MDF or combi core for a flat face under a clear finish.

The pairing that wastes money is an A1 rift face on a hidden carcass part. The pairing that costs rejects is a B2 plain-sliced face on a door run.

Is white oak plywood waterproof?

No. White oak plywood is not waterproof, even though white oak wood resists water better than most hardwoods. A panel’s water resistance comes from its glue bond and its finish, not from the face species.

Standard interior panels are bonded with UF glue for dry rooms. Damp rooms such as bathrooms and laundries need a melamine-fortified (MR) or phenolic (WBP) bond and a sealed finish on every face and edge. Minh Thanh makes MR and phenolic bonds to the customer’s specification. Exterior and marine uses need a panel built for them, not a decorative oak face.

Can white oak plywood be stained or finished?

Yes. White oak plywood takes stain, oil, lacquer and reactive finishes such as fuming or iron acetate well. Its closed pores give an even colour, and the tannin in the wood reacts with ammonia and iron to darken it.

Three rules keep a stained run even:

  1. Test on the same cut. Rift, quarter and plain-sliced faces absorb stain differently.
  2. Sand lightly. A face veneer is thin; heavy sanding cuts through it. Our sanded faces arrive ready for finishing.
  3. Finish both faces. Equal coats on both sides keep the panel flat.

Minh Thanh’s furniture faces are sanded, polished and UV-ready on both sides, for buyers who apply their own UV coating line.

What do US buyers need: TSCA Title VI, Lacey Act and duties?

US buyers of white oak plywood need TSCA Title VI formaldehyde certification, Lacey Act species and origin data, and a check of trade remedy duties. The first two are documents the mill supplies; the third is set by the US government.

  • Formaldehyde: hardwood plywood with a veneer core must meet 0.05 ppm under TSCA Title VI; see the EPA composite wood standards (checked October 2026). Minh Thanh holds CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification, ICTT mill no. 23024. Six chamber tests from April 2025 to June 2026 averaged 0.014–0.032 ppm.
  • Labels and papers: US order panels carry the TSCA Title VI label, and the invoice and bill of lading state compliance.
  • Lacey Act: we supply face and core species and the Vietnamese harvest origin for your declaration.
  • Duties: the US Commerce Department published final anti-dumping and countervailing duty determinations on hardwood and decorative plywood from Vietnam on 21 July 2026 (A-552-851, C-552-852). Check the current status with your customs broker; see US hardwood plywood duties.

What do European buyers need for oak-faced panels?

European buyers need the emission level their furniture market asks for and the EUDR due-diligence data for the wood. Minh Thanh’s panels meet the emission and quality requirements European furniture buyers ask for, with CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification and the chamber tests as proof.

Third-party testing to your own method, for example EN 717-1, is arranged through SGS on request. For the EU Deforestation Regulation, we supply the EUDR compliance dossier (origin records and geolocation files) with orders. FSC is available* for buyers who need a certified claim.

Where can you buy white oak plywood from manufacturers in Asia?

Buy single sheets of white oak plywood from local hardwood distributors and lumber yards, and container quantities direct from panel manufacturers in Europe or Asia. The right channel depends on volume, lead time and on how fixed your specification is.

Buyer Best channel Ask for
Workshop, under a pallet Local hardwood distributor Cut, grade and core on the sheet label
Cabinet plant, regular runs Regional distributor or importer Same face cut and grade every delivery
Importer, container loads Panel mill direct Written build, approved sample, documents

Buyers in Canada, Europe and South-East Asia ask the same questions of a mill: cut, grade, core, thickness tolerance, emission and origin papers. A mill that answers all six in writing is easier to compare.

Minh Thanh’s standard faces are EV, poplar, birch, okoume and pine, with bintangor, eucalyptus, gurjan, sapele and others on request. For an oak look, send the face species, cut and grade with an approved sample; we reply with the build we can make and its price. An EV plywood face, engineered veneer that we produce, is the usual lower-cost route to an even, straight grain.

How much is 3/4 white oak plywood?

The price of 3/4 white oak plywood is set by the cut, the face and back grade, the core and the quantity, in that order. Rift and quarter faces cost more than plain-sliced because each log yields less of them.

  • Cut: plain-sliced lowest, then quarter, then rift.
  • Grade: A1 costs more than A2 and B2.
  • Core: veneer core and MDF core price differently; combi sits between.
  • Quantity and delivery: a container is quoted per cubic metre, FOB, CFR or CIF.

The US reference is a distributor’s sheet price. Cherokee Wood Products lists 4 × 8 ft white oak sheets from $104 to $209 each, with stocked grades 1/4 B1, 1/4 A1, 1/2 B2 and 3/4 B1:

Route Unit Reference
US distributor, stocked sheet per 4 × 8 ft sheet $104 (1/4 in) to $209 (3/4 in), unfinished, grade B1 to A1
Container from Vietnam per m³, FOB, CFR or CIF starts from US$350/m³ in October 2026 for furniture and interior plywood; an oak face prices above it

The US shelf price is higher because it carries the distributor’s stock, freight and margin on top of the mill price. Rift or quarter cut, an A1 face instead of B2, and a veneer core instead of MDF each move the price up.

As a reference point, Minh Thanh’s furniture and interior plywood started from US$350/m³ in October 2026; an oak face prices above that starting point. Ask for a price on one written specification, not on the words “white oak plywood”.

White oak plywood vs maple, Baltic birch and prefinished panels for cabinets

White oak is the pick when the grain should show; maple, Baltic birch and prefinished panels win when it should not, or when time matters more than the species. Bertastore compares the same options for cabinet builds.

Material Look Best for Weak point
White oak plywood Open grain, brown with an olive cast; rift and quarter for straight lines Visible cabinet faces, built-ins, furniture Dearer than birch; test stain on the same face cut (rift, quarter and plain-sliced faces take colour differently)
Maple plywood Pale, tight grain Painted or clear-coated modern cabinets Blotches when stained
Baltic birch plywood Many thin plies, visible edge Drawers, shop fixtures, exposed edges Plain pale face; a different look from oak
Prefinished plywood Factory-applied finish Fast installs, drawer boxes Limited colours; damage shows
MDF-core oak plywood Flat, stable face Large door panels to be painted or veneered Weak screw-holding in edges

Oak veneer plywood vs white oak plywood

“Oak veneer plywood” is the broad term, and it often means red oak; “white oak plywood” names the species. White oak has a tighter grain, a brown-olive colour and a more even stain; red oak has a pink cast and a bolder grain. If the order says only “oak”, the supplier may send red oak, so write the species.

Common mistakes when ordering white oak plywood

  • Not naming the cut: plain-sliced, rift and quarter look different; write which, and approve a sample.
  • Mixed leaves: faces from different logs vary in colour; ask for sequence-matched leaves on one project.
  • MDF core where screws go into edges: use a veneer core for edges that take hinges and fixings.
  • Only “oak” on the order: write white oak, the grade (A1, A2, B2) and the thickness.
  • Staining without a test: stain an offcut first, because oak takes colour differently from birch.

What should you write on a white oak plywood order?

Write the face, cut, grade, core, size, glue and documents in one line, then approve a sample of exactly that build. Use this order:

  1. Face and cut: white oak, rift-cut, book-matched or slip-matched.
  2. Grade: face and back, for example A1.
  3. Core: veneer core species, MDF or combi.
  4. Size and thickness: 1220 × 2440 × 18 mm, ±0.2 mm.
  5. Glue and emission: UF glue at E0 emission, TSCA Title VI label for US orders.
  6. Finish: sanded, UV-ready both faces.
  7. Quantity, packing and port: sheets per specification, delivery term, destination.

Minh Thanh’s minimum order is one 40HC with mixed specifications by agreement, and production takes 15–45 days after the deposit. Free samples go out with the quotation; send your specification to contact@minhthanhplywood.com.

Seven order steps for white oak plywood: cut, grade, core, size, glue, finish, documents and shipping

Buyer questions, answered

What is white oak plywood?

White oak plywood is a panel with a white oak (Quercus alba) face veneer over a veneer, MDF or combination core. It is used for cabinets, furniture and wall panelling where a light brown, durable oak surface is wanted.

Do they make white oak plywood?

Yes. White oak plywood is made in rift, quarter and plain-sliced faces, in 4x8 sheets from 1/4 in to 3/4 in, by North American, European and Asian panel mills.

What is white oak plywood used for?

Kitchen and bath cabinets, built-in furniture, shelving, wall panelling, doors and store fixtures. Rift white oak is the common choice for modern flat-front cabinet doors.

Is white oak plywood waterproof?

No. White oak wood resists water better than red oak because its pores are closed, but the panel's water resistance comes from its glue bond. Interior UF-bonded panels suit dry rooms; a phenolic (WBP) bond suits damp ones.

Can white oak plywood be stained?

Yes. White oak takes stain, oil and reactive finishes well. Test the stain on a sample of the same face cut, because rift, quarter and plain-sliced faces absorb colour differently.

What is the difference between white oak and red oak plywood?

White oak is light to mid brown with an olive cast and closed pores; red oak is pinkish-red with open pores. White oak shows stronger ray fleck when quartered and resists moisture better.

What does A1 mean on white oak plywood?

A1 means an A-grade face and a grade 1 back under the North American hardwood plywood grading system. The letter grades the face, AA to E; the number grades the back, 1 to 4.

How much is 3/4 white oak plywood?

The price depends on the cut, the face grade, the core and the quantity: rift and quarter faces cost more than plain-sliced, and an A1 grade more than B2. Ask for a price per sheet on one written specification.

Where can I buy white oak plywood?

Single sheets come from local hardwood distributors and lumber yards. Container quantities come direct from panel mills, quoted on a written specification with an approved sample.

Where does white oak veneer come from?

American white oak grows in the eastern United States and Canada. European oak (Quercus robur and Quercus petraea) is sold in Europe as a separate species with a similar look.

Is white oak plywood good for cabinets?

Yes. White oak plywood is one of the most specified cabinet panels: it machines cleanly, holds screws in a veneer core and takes clear and stained finishes evenly.
