Red oak plywood is a hardwood panel faced with red oak veneer, usually northern red oak (Quercus rubra), over a veneer, MDF or combination core. It is sold in 4x8 sheets from 1/4 to 3/4 inch for cabinets, furniture and trim work. Minh Thanh Plywood sets out the spec table, the grades, the core weights and the order line a buyer sends.
What is red oak plywood?
Red oak plywood is a hardwood panel with a thin red oak face veneer bonded over a core of cross-laid veneers, MDF or both. The face is usually northern red oak (Quercus rubra), the most common of the red oak hardwoods in North America.
Red oak wood is pinkish to light reddish-brown with a strong, open grain. Its pores are open, so the wood takes up stain and water readily. That is its main difference from white oak.
Red oak veneer plywood is one of the most widely stocked hardwood panels in North America. It is the standard face for stained kitchen cabinets, shelving and trim, and it costs less than white oak in the same cut and grade. The hardwood veneered plywood guide covers the other face species.
Red oak plywood specification at a glance
A red oak plywood order is fixed by seven lines: face cut, face and back grade, core, thickness, size, glue and tolerance. The spec table sets out the usual options and what we supply on the core side.
| Line | Usual options | Minh Thanh practice |
|---|---|---|
| Face cut | Plain-sliced, rift, quarter-sliced | Quoted on the buyer’s face specification |
| Face / back grade | AA, A, B, C to E face; 1 to 4 back | Matched to the approved sample |
| Core | Veneer, MDF, combination | White Styrax or Eucalyptus veneer core |
| Thickness | 1/4, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 in | 3–40 mm; 6, 12, 15, 18 mm for these |
| Size | 4 × 8 ft | 1220 × 2440 or 1250 × 2500 mm, custom |
| Glue and emission | Interior UF, MR, phenolic | UF glue at E0 emission standard; MR, phenolic to spec |
| Tolerance | Mill standard | Sanded ±0.2–0.3 mm, down to ±0.2 mm |
Two details sit behind the core column. Our furniture cores are stitched across and along the grain, and furniture-grade panels are pressed twice: the core is pressed and calibrated, then the face and back go on.
Plain-sliced, rift or quarter sawn red oak plywood?
Plain-sliced red oak gives the familiar cathedral grain at the lowest price; rift gives straight, tight grain; quarter sawn red oak plywood gives straight grain with short ray fleck. The cut is the biggest single choice on the look.
| Cut | Grain on the face | Fleck | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain-sliced | Cathedral arches with straight edges | None | Stained cabinets, shelves, trim |
| Rift | Straight, even lines | Little or none | Modern doors, long runs |
| Quarter-sliced | Straight lines with flake | Short ray fleck | Feature panels, Arts and Crafts style |
| Rotary | Wide, wild figure | None | Utility and back faces |
Red oak’s ray fleck is shorter and less striking than white oak’s. Buyers who want strong flake usually choose white oak; buyers who want warm, even straight grain choose rift red oak.
Write the leaf match with the cut: book-matched for a mirrored pattern, slip-matched for a repeating one, plank-matched for a solid-board look.

Red oak veneer plywood grades: A1, A2 and B2 decoded
Red oak veneer plywood is graded with a face letter and a back number under the North American hardwood plywood standard, ANSI/HPVA HP-1. A1 is the common cabinet grade; B2 is the common shop and utility grade.
- A1: A-grade face, well matched with small natural marks; sound grade 1 back. Both faces can be seen.
- A2: A-grade face over a grade 2 back with repairs and colour change. One good face.
- B1 and B2: B-grade face with more colour variation and small repairs. Good for stained, less visible parts.
- C to E faces, 3 and 4 backs: repairs and open defects; for painted or hidden parts.
Grades differ slightly between mills and markets. For an order from outside North America, send the grade with an approved sample of both faces, because the sample is what both sides check at loading.

Red oak vs white oak plywood: a quick comparison
Red oak plywood is warmer in colour, open-pored and lower in price; white oak plywood is cooler brown, closed-pored and better with water. Both machine, glue and finish well.
| Point | Red oak | White oak |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Pinkish to reddish-brown | Light to mid brown, olive cast |
| Pores | Open | Closed |
| Ray fleck | Short | Long, strong |
| Damp rooms | Weaker | Better |
| Price in the same cut and grade | Lower | Higher |
Choose red oak for traditional stained cabinets, trim and budget runs. Choose white oak for modern palettes or bathrooms. Our white oak plywood guide covers that face in detail.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of red oak plywood?
Red oak plywood’s advantages are its warm grain, even stain uptake, good machining and lower price than white oak. Its disadvantages are open pores, a pink tone and a thin face that limits sanding.
Advantages
- Takes stain evenly; dark and mid tones look rich.
- Cuts, routs and glues cleanly.
- Widely stocked, so repairs and additions match.
- Lower cost than white oak, walnut or cherry faces.
Disadvantages
- Open pores need a grain filler for a smooth, glossy finish.
- The pink tone can look dated in cool modern palettes.
- Less resistant to water than white oak.
- Edges need banding or solid lipping to hide the core.
Is red oak plywood strong, and does it warp?
A veneer-core red oak plywood panel is strong and stiff enough for cabinet boxes, shelves and furniture frames, and it stays flat when it is balanced, dry and stored flat. The core and the build decide both strength and flatness.
Warping has three causes: an unbalanced build, one-sided finishing and uneven moisture. A mill controls the first two inside the panel. Minh Thanh dries veneers and finished panels to 8–12 % moisture at dispatch, the normal range for furniture plywood, and presses the core flat before the faces go on.
On site, store sheets flat on bearers, let them settle to the room before cutting, and finish both faces equally. A long shelf in 3/4 red oak plywood should rest on supports or a front lip for heavy loads.
Is red oak plywood waterproof?
No. Red oak plywood is not waterproof: red oak’s open pores take up water, and standard red oak panels are bonded with interior glue for dry rooms. Water resistance comes from the bond and the finish.
For kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, order a moisture-resistant (MR, melamine-fortified) or phenolic (WBP) bond and seal every face and edge. Minh Thanh makes MR and phenolic bonds to the customer’s specification. For a wet area where the look must be oak, white oak is the better face.

Can you stain red oak plywood?
Yes. Red oak plywood stains well and evenly, which is why it is the standard face for stained cabinets. Its open grain holds pigment and gives a strong grain pattern under mid and dark stains.
- Sand lightly with the grain; the face veneer is thin.
- Test the stain on an offcut of the same face cut.
- Fill the grain if you want a smooth, glass-like top coat.
- Finish both faces with the same number of coats.
Our sanded and polished furniture faces are UV-ready on both sides, for plants that apply their own UV coating.
What is red oak plywood used for?
Red oak plywood is used for stained kitchen and bath cabinets, bookcases, shelving, furniture, wall panelling, interior doors and trim backing. The thickness follows the part:
- 1/4 red oak plywood: cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, wainscot and wall panels.
- 1/2 in: drawer boxes, light shelves, cabinet ends that are glued to a frame.
- 3/4 red oak plywood: cabinet boxes, shelves, tops, doors with a frame.
Plain-sliced faces suit most stained runs. Rift and quarter faces suit doors and feature pieces. A painted part does not need an oak face at all; poplar or birch is the cost-effective face for it.
Red oak plywood 4x8 and 3/4 red oak plywood: weights and container loads
A red oak plywood 4x8 sheet is 1220 × 2440 mm in metric, and its weight is set mostly by the core. At 18 mm, Minh Thanh’s reference weights are about 26.8 kg per sheet on white Styrax core, 31.1 kg on Acacia and 34.8 kg on Eucalyptus.
| 18 mm core | Weight per sheet | Sheets per 40HC | Packs | Panel volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White Styrax | 26.8 kg | 990 | 18 × 55 | about 53 m³ |
| Acacia | 31.1 kg | 880 | 16 × 55 | about 47 m³ |
| Eucalyptus | 34.8 kg | 795 | 15 × 53 | about 43 m³ |
The plan uses packs about 1,000 mm high and a 28,000 kg planning payload, with a lower count if your booking carries less. Acacia cores are made on order; Styrax and Eucalyptus are standard.
A true 3/4 in sheet is 19.05 mm and a true 1/4 in sheet is 6.35 mm. Metric 18 mm and 6 mm panels are slightly thinner, so set dados and hinges to the actual panel.

What should US importers know about red oak plywood from Asia?
US importers need TSCA Title VI formaldehyde compliance, Lacey Act species and origin data, and a duty check for hardwood plywood from Vietnam. The rules are public; the documents come from the mill.
- Formaldehyde: veneer-core hardwood plywood must meet 0.05 ppm under TSCA Title VI (EPA standard, checked October 2026). Minh Thanh holds CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification, ICTT mill no. 23024, and US order panels carry the TSCA Title VI label.
- Lacey Act: we supply face and core species and the Vietnamese harvest origin for the importer’s declaration.
- Chinese inputs: since a 2023 circumvention finding, Vietnamese panels with Chinese core components (core platforms or core veneers, with or without Chinese faces) are treated as Chinese for duty (Federal Register, 20 July 2023); other Vietnamese panels need importer and exporter certifications.
- 2026 cases: Commerce published final anti-dumping and countervailing determinations on hardwood and decorative plywood from Vietnam on 21 July 2026 (A-552-851).
Check the current status with your customs broker before booking. Our guide to US hardwood plywood HS codes and duties follows the cases.
Where can you buy red oak plywood?
Buy single sheets of red oak plywood at home centres and hardwood dealers, regular runs from panel distributors, and container loads direct from mills. Large US home centres such as Home Depot stock plain-sliced red oak in common thicknesses, while a cabinet shop or importer gets better prices by the pallet or container.
| Buyer | Channel | Ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Workshop or contractor | Home centre, hardwood dealer | Actual thickness, core type |
| Cabinet plant | Distributor in Canada, the US or Taiwan | Same cut and grade on every delivery |
| Importer | Mill direct, by container | Written build, approved sample, documents |
Minh Thanh builds furniture panels with the face the buyer orders over stitched, twice-pressed Styrax or Eucalyptus cores. Our standard faces are EV, poplar, birch, okoume and pine, with others on request; send your red oak face specification and sample, and we reply with the build we can make. An engineered veneer face, which we produce, gives an even, repeatable grain at a lower cost.
How much is a sheet of red oak plywood?
The price of a sheet of red oak plywood follows the cut, the grade, the core and the quantity. Plain-sliced B2 on a veneer core sits at the low end; rift or quarter A1 sits at the high end.
- Cut: plain-sliced, then quarter, then rift.
- Grade: B2, then A2, then A1.
- Core: Styrax for light panels; Eucalyptus for dense ones; MDF and combi priced separately.
- Volume and term: containers are priced per cubic metre, FOB, CFR or CIF.
For reference, Minh Thanh’s furniture and interior plywood started from US$350/m³ in October 2026; a red oak face prices above that point. One 18 mm sheet is 0.0536 m³, so about 18.7 sheets make a cubic metre.
Red oak plywood sheets in the US market
US mills sell red oak plywood by nominal thickness and build. Baird Brothers lists the common set, all cabinet grade:
| US sheet | Build | Face grades | Metric equivalent we make |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4 in | MDF core | G1S or G2S (good one or two sides) | 6 mm |
| 1/2 in | 5-ply | G2S | 12 mm |
| 3/4 in | 7-ply veneer core | G2S | 18 mm |
Some US mills cut sheets oversize at 48-1/2 × 96-1/2 in to leave trim allowance, and offer a prefinished clear semi-gloss or satin face on one side. Minh Thanh supplies 1220 × 2440 mm (4 × 8 ft) and 1250 × 2500 mm sheets, sanded and ready for your own UV or clear finish, and cuts to size for parts.
Indicative FOB per sheet: at the US$350/m³ starting price, one 18 mm sheet (0.0536 m³) works out to about US$18.8 as a raw FOB example. A red oak face prices above that, and the figure is not a quote or a retail sheet price. A US retail sheet costs more because duty, ocean freight, port charges, inland haulage and the dealer margin sit on top of the factory price, which is why importers buying by the container see a lower cost per sheet than a lumberyard shelf.
What should you send in a red oak plywood RFQ?
Send one line per specification with the face, cut, grade, core, size, glue, tolerance and quantity, plus a sample to approve. A complete line gets a firm price in one reply.
- Face and cut: red oak, plain-sliced, book-matched.
- Grade: A1 or as the approved sample.
- Core: white Styrax veneer core.
- Size and thickness: 1220 × 2440 × 18 mm, ±0.2 mm.
- Glue and emission: UF glue at E0 emission, TSCA Title VI label for US orders.
- Finish: sanded both faces, UV-ready.
- Quantity and port: sheets per specification, CIF port.
Minh Thanh’s minimum order is one 40HC, with mixed specifications by agreement. Production takes 15–45 days after the 30% deposit. Free samples go out with the quotation; email contact@minhthanhplywood.com.

Buyer questions, answered
What is red oak plywood?
Red oak plywood is a panel with a red oak face veneer, usually Quercus rubra, over a veneer, MDF or combination core. It has a warm pinkish-brown colour and open, strong grain.
Is red oak plywood good?
Yes, for cabinets, furniture and trim that will be stained or clear-finished. It machines cleanly, takes stain evenly and costs less than white oak in the same cut and grade.
Is red oak plywood strong?
A veneer-core red oak panel is strong and stiff for cabinet boxes and shelves; the core, not the face, sets most of the strength. An MDF core is flatter but holds screws less well at the edge.
Is red oak plywood waterproof?
No. Red oak has open pores that take up water, and interior red oak plywood is bonded for dry use. For damp rooms, order a moisture-resistant or phenolic bond and seal every face and edge.
Does red oak plywood warp?
A balanced panel dried to 8–12 % moisture and stored flat stays flat. Warping comes from an unbalanced build, uneven finishing or one-sided moisture.
Can I stain red oak plywood?
Yes. Red oak takes oil and gel stains well and evenly; its open pores hold colour, so use a grain filler for a smooth, glass-like finish.
What are the disadvantages of oak plywood?
Open pores need filling for a smooth finish, the pink tone of red oak can clash with modern palettes, the thin face limits sanding, and edges need banding to hide the core.
How much is a sheet of red oak plywood?
It depends on the cut, the grade, the core and the quantity: plain-sliced B2 on a veneer core is the lowest, rift A1 the highest. Price a container per cubic metre on one written specification.
Does Home Depot sell red oak plywood?
Large US home centres stock red oak plywood in 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 inch sheets, mostly plain-sliced. Cabinet plants and importers buy from hardwood distributors or direct from mills.
Where can I find red oak plywood suppliers in Canada or Taiwan?
Hardwood panel distributors stock it in single sheets in both markets. Importers buying containers source direct from panel mills and should ask for the build, an approved sample and the emission documents.
What is quarter sawn red oak plywood?
It is red oak plywood with a quarter-sliced face: straight grain with short ray fleck across it. It costs more than plain-sliced because each log yields fewer quarter-sliced leaves.
