Plywood 4x4 is a nominal half-sheet format, commonly specified at 1220 × 1220 mm; 2x4 project panels are commonly 610 × 1220 mm. The cutting plan must allow for saw kerf and trimming. Minh Thanh Plywood cuts larger parent sheets to the agreed finished dimensions, packs panels by size and ships them by the container.
Does plywood come in 4x4?
Yes. 4x4 plywood is sold as a nominal half-sheet format, commonly specified at 1220 × 1220 mm. Small panels are cut from larger sheets, and finished dimensions depend on saw kerf and trimming. A true 1220 × 1220 mm panel needs a parent sheet large enough to allow for those cuts.
That has two consequences for a buyer. First, a 4x4 panel has the same build, face, glue and tolerance as the full sheet it came from, so the specification is written the same way. Second, the price and the container plan start from the parent sheet: the number of pieces per sheet and the offcut decide the cost per piece.
At Minh Thanh Plywood we cut full panels into 4, 6 or 8 pieces as a regular cut-to-size service, and halves are cut on the same saws. The pieces are packed by size and shipped by the container to importers who resell project panels and to factories that assemble them.
Small plywood sizes in mm and feet
The table shows nominal dimensions and geometric yield from a 1220 × 2440 mm sheet before saw kerf and trimming. Exact finished sizes require a cutting plan that includes those losses.
| Name | Nominal size in mm | Size in feet | Geometric pieces before kerf | Remainder before kerf |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4x4, half sheet | 1220 × 1220 | 4 × 4 | 2 | None before kerf |
| 2x8, half sheet lengthwise | 610 × 2440 | 2 × 8 | 2 | None before kerf |
| 2x4, quarter sheet | 610 × 1220 | 2 × 4 | 4 | None before kerf |
| 2x2 | 610 × 610 | 2 × 2 | 8 | None before kerf |
| Sixth sheet | about 610 × 813 | 2 × 2.7 | 6 | None before kerf |
| European 1200 × 600 | 1200 × 600 | about 3.9 × 2 | 4 | Trim strips |
| 4x6 | 1220 × 1830 | 4 × 6 | 1, plus one 2x4 | 610 × 1220 piece |
| 3x8 | 915 × 2440 | 3 × 8 | 1 | 305 × 2440 strip |
| 6x3 | 1830 × 915 | 6 × 3 | 1 | L-shaped remainder, about 44 % |
The half-, quarter-, eighth- and sixth-sheet rows show nominal layouts before saw kerf and trimming. Exact listed dimensions may require a larger parent. The European layout leaves cutting allowance within a 1220 × 2440 mm sheet.

What does a 4x4 or 2x4 plywood panel cost by thickness?
A 4x4 panel of 18 mm furniture plywood costs about US$9.38 of panel at our FOB price, and a 2x4 about US$4.69; commercial plywood costs 29% less. These are indicative raw FOB panel values for October 2026 at US$350/m³ (furniture and interior) and US$250/m³ (commercial), before freight, duty and the cutting charge.
| Thickness | 4x4 panel volume | 4x4 FOB: commercial / furniture | 2x4 panel volume | 2x4 FOB: commercial / furniture |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 mm (1/8 in.) | 0.0045 m³ | US$1.12 / US$1.56 | 0.0022 m³ | US$0.56 / US$0.78 |
| 6 mm (1/4 in.) | 0.0089 m³ | US$2.23 / US$3.13 | 0.0045 m³ | US$1.12 / US$1.56 |
| 9 mm (3/8 in.) | 0.0134 m³ | US$3.35 / US$4.69 | 0.0067 m³ | US$1.67 / US$2.34 |
| 12 mm (1/2 in.) | 0.0179 m³ | US$4.47 / US$6.25 | 0.0089 m³ | US$2.23 / US$3.13 |
| 15 mm (5/8 in.) | 0.0223 m³ | US$5.58 / US$7.81 | 0.0112 m³ | US$2.79 / US$3.91 |
| 18 mm (3/4 in.) | 0.0268 m³ | US$6.70 / US$9.38 | 0.0134 m³ | US$3.35 / US$4.69 |
The faces mirror what a US retail filter offers: poplar, birch, okoume and EV (engineered veneer) at A/B or B/B grade, with eucalyptus and pine on order; the face and grade move the price up from these starting points. Retail 4 ft panels are sold at an actual size such as 47.75 × 48 in. (about 1213 × 1219 mm) with a nominal thickness, and a retail project panel from The Home Depot comes in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 in. and other thicknesses in oak, birch, walnut and cedar faces (read 21 October 2026).
Ours are cut to 1220 × 1220 mm with length and width held to ±2 mm, and to your own part size on request. Shipping time from Hai Phong to the Middle East is 15 to 25 days, so a cut-to-size container reaches a Jordan or Gulf importer in under four weeks at sea.
What is a half sheet of plywood?
A half sheet is nominally half of a full 4x8 sheet: either the 4x4 format (1220 × 1220 mm) or the 2x8 format (610 × 2440 mm). Both specified sizes have the same area, 1.49 m², but they serve different uses.
The 4x4 half sheet is the retail project panel: it fits in a car, covers a small table top, a shelf unit side or a sign board, and it is the size most DIY and hardware chains stock next to full sheets. The 2x8 strip is the long panel for shelves, worktop bases, skirting backs and long box sides.
One detail matters at the cut: the saw kerf. Dividing a 2440 mm length into two equal pieces gives each piece slightly less than 1220 mm, because the blade removes wood. If your drawing needs a true 1220 × 1220 mm, write the finished size and its tolerance, and we plan the cut from a 1250 × 2500 mm parent or a custom parent size; if 1218 mm is fine, write that.
How much does a 4x4 plywood panel weigh?
An 18 mm 4x4 half sheet weighs about 13.4 kg on a white Styrax core and about 17.4 kg on Eucalyptus. The panel holds 1.22 × 1.22 × 0.018 = 0.0268 m³ of wood, and the weight is that volume times the density.
| Piece, 18 mm thick | Volume | Weight on Styrax, 500 kg/m³ | Weight on Eucalyptus, 650 kg/m³ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4x4, 1220 × 1220 mm | 0.0268 m³ | about 13.4 kg | about 17.4 kg |
| 2x4, 610 × 1220 mm | 0.0134 m³ | about 6.7 kg | about 8.7 kg |
| 2x8, 610 × 2440 mm | 0.0268 m³ | about 13.4 kg | about 17.4 kg |
| 4x8 parent, 1220 × 2440 mm | 0.0536 m³ | about 26.8 kg | about 34.8 kg |
For other thicknesses, scale by the thickness: a 12 mm 4x4 on Styrax weighs about 8.9 kg, a 9 mm one about 6.7 kg. For retail, weight decides how a shopper carries the panel; for the importer it decides how many pieces a container holds before it reaches its weight limit.

Plywood 2x4 and 2x2: the quarter and eighth sheets
A 2x4 plywood panel is a nominal quarter sheet of 610 × 1220 mm, and a 2x2 is a nominal eighth of 610 × 610 mm. These layouts use the parent efficiently, but exact finished dimensions need allowance for saw kerf and trimming.
At nominal division before kerf, 100 parent sheets represent 400 quarter sheets or 800 eighth sheets. These are planning counts; confirm the finished dimensions, parent size and cutting allowance before treating them as production yields.
Typical uses for the quarter sheet: drawer bottoms and box sides, cabinet backs for small units, craft and laser blanks, sign boards and shelving in retail fixtures. The 2x2 serves as a craft panel, a template blank, a seat or stool top and a test sample size. For Europe, the near equivalent of a 2x4 is 600 × 1200 mm; four come from one 1220 × 2440 mm sheet with a trim strip from each edge.
4x6 and 6x4 plywood sheets
A 4x6 plywood sheet is commonly specified at 1220 × 1830 mm. The nominal remainder from a 4x8 sheet is 610 × 1220 mm before kerf; after the cut it is narrower. To obtain both a full-size 4x6 and a full-size 2x4, select a larger parent sheet.
“6x4” is the same panel described length first, the way UK and Australian buyers often write it. Write the size in millimetres with the grain direction, for example “1830 × 1220 mm, face grain along the 1830 mm side”, so the cut matches the face you will see.
4x6 panels suit table tops, partition panels, trailer floors and bed bases, where a full sheet is too large to handle or ship to the end user and a half sheet is too small.
Plywood 6x3 and 3x8 sizes
A 6x3 plywood panel is 1830 × 915 mm and a 3x8 is 915 × 2440 mm; both are cut from a 4x8 sheet with a strip left over. They are common in the UK, where “6 x 3” also appears as 1800 × 900 mm.
Before saw kerf, the 3x8 layout leaves a nominal 305 × 2440 mm strip, a quarter of the sheet, which suits shelf fronts, plinths or packing battens. The 6x3 layout leaves an L-shaped remainder of about 44 % of the sheet before kerf, including a nominal 2x4 area and narrow strips; the finished offcut is smaller after cutting.
For a regular order of 6x3 or 3x8 panels, there are two ways to bring the cost down. One is to combine sizes in the cutting list so the strips become other parts you sell. The other is a custom parent size: we already press 1220 × 2500 and 1220 × 2280 mm parents alongside the standard sizes, and the parent is chosen to fit the cutting list with the least offcut.
How do you choose the parent sheet and cut plan?
Start from the list of finished pieces and their quantities, then choose the parent that wastes least. The steps we follow on every cut-to-size order:
- List the finished sizes in millimetres with grain direction and piece quantity.
- Pick the parent format: 1220 × 2440 or 1250 × 2500 mm, or a custom parent such as 1220 × 2500 or 1220 × 2280 mm.
- Nest the pieces so that leftover strips become other pieces on the list.
- Check the kerf and trim: finished sizes allow for the blade and any edge trim.
- Fix the tolerance: ±2 mm on length and width as standard.
- Agree the pack plan: pieces per pack by size, and the label for each pack.
- Approve a sample of each size before the run.
A 1250 × 2500 mm parent leaves room for the blade and edge trim, so it yields two full 1220 × 1220 mm pieces, or quarters close to 625 × 1250 mm for buyers who work on the European size.

Which thickness, face and core for small panels?
Choose thickness by use and face by finish, exactly as for full sheets; the only difference is that small panels are often sold to end users, so the face that shows on the shelf matters more.
| Use of the small panel | Typical thickness | Face and core |
|---|---|---|
| Craft, laser and model blanks | 3–6 mm | Poplar or birch face, 5-ply (3–5 mm) thin build |
| Drawer bottoms, cabinet backs | 3–6 mm | Face to match the cabinet inside |
| Shelving, boxes, signs | 9–12 mm | Poplar, EV or pine face |
| Furniture parts, table tops | 15–18 mm | Birch, EV or okoume face, Styrax core |
| Utility and packing | 9–18 mm | Commercial faces, lower-cost core |
For panels that will be painted at home or used outdoors under cover, a water-resistant bond is a better choice: melamine-fortified or phenolic (WBP) glue is made to order. For indoor furniture and craft panels, our standard is UF glue at E0 emission, and our furniture panels hold CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification (ICTT mill no. 23024).
California regulates formaldehyde emissions from hardwood plywood under its composite wood products rules. Regulated hardwood plywood panels imported into the US must be certified and labelled as TSCA Title VI compliant under EPA’s rule.
White Styrax gives a light panel that shoppers carry easily; Eucalyptus gives a harder, heavier panel with better screw holding.

How are small panels packed for export?
Small panels are packed by size, flat on a pallet base, with top and bottom covers, corner protection and steel straps, so each pack can go straight to a warehouse rack or a store. Every pack carries a label with the part reference, size and piece count, and the pack plan is agreed before production. Raw-wood packaging, including dunnage, falls within ISPM 15; processed plywood packaging is excluded (IPPC standard scope).
For planning, our container figures start from parent sheets. A 40HC loaded with 18 mm Styrax-core parent sheets holds 990 sheets in 18 packs of 55. Cut into halves, that material is 1,980 pieces of 4x4; cut into quarters, 3,960 pieces of 2x4. These are material equivalents before saw kerf; the final piece count follows the approved cutting layout, the pack footprint, the weighed packs and the booked payload.
The weight limit is the same as for full sheets: we plan up to 28,000 kg of panels in a 40HC, add the packaging for the booking check, and a lower booking limit lowers the count. Every shipment is photographed and filmed before loading, and you receive the photos and video. The packing calculator runs the same calculation for your thickness and core.
Minimum order and lead time for small panels
The minimum order is one 40HC container, and one container can carry several sizes, thicknesses and faces in whole packs by agreement. An importer can therefore fill one box with 4x4, 2x4 and 2x8 panels in two or three thicknesses for a retail range.
Production is 15–45 days after the 30 % deposit. The balance of 70 % is paid against the scanned B/L, or by an irrevocable L/C at sight, and we quote FOB Hai Phong, CFR or CIF. Free samples of each size are sent before the order so the face, edges and pack label can be approved. Sea transit from Hai Phong is added: about 30–40 days to Northern Europe, 25–35 to the Mediterranean, 15–25 to the Middle East and 20–30 to the US West Coast, by carrier and route.

Is it cheaper to buy 4x4 plywood or cut 4x8 sheets yourself?
For a reseller, buying factory-cut 4x4 and 2x4 panels is usually cheaper than cutting full sheets in the warehouse, because the mill cuts on production saws at the source and the pieces ship in the same container. For a workshop that already runs a panel saw, cutting full sheets keeps more flexibility.
Three numbers decide it. The material cost is the same, priced per cubic metre: furniture plywood from US$350/m³ and commercial plywood from US$250/m³ as of October 2026. The cutting cost is lower at the mill. The handling cost is lower for small packs, which go straight to a shelf without a saw or a second handling.
Factory cutting also holds the size: our length and width tolerance is ±2 mm, and sanded furniture panels are held to ±0.2–0.3 mm on thickness. A cut done on a site saw rarely matches that.
What to write on a small-panel order
Send one line per finished size, and the quote will match the panels you receive.
- Use: “retail project panel”, “drawer bottom” or “table top”.
- Finished size: “1220 × 1220 mm” or “610 × 1220 mm”, with grain direction and ±2 mm.
- Thickness and build: for example “12 mm, white Styrax core”.
- Glue and emission: “UF glue at E0 emission” or “WBP phenolic”.
- Face and back grade: “poplar A/B” or “birch D+/D”, matched to the sample.
- Pack plan and quantity: pieces per pack and pieces per size.
- Port and Incoterm: FOB Hai Phong, CFR or CIF.

Buyer questions, answered
Does plywood come in 4x4 sheets?
Yes, as nominal half sheets. For a finished size of 1220 × 1220 mm, the parent sheet must allow for saw kerf and trimming; a 2440 mm length cannot yield two full 1220 mm pieces after a saw cut. Mills supply the agreed finished size as a cut-to-size product.
What is the price of 4x4 plywood?
A 4x4 half sheet is priced from the full sheet it is cut from, plus cutting and packing. Minh Thanh furniture plywood starts from US$350/m³ and commercial plywood from US$250/m³ (October 2026); an 18 mm 4x4 holds about 0.027 m³ of wood.
How big is a 2x4 sheet of plywood?
A 2x4 project panel is commonly specified at 610 × 1220 mm, the nominal quarter-sheet format. Four full-size pieces need a parent large enough to allow for saw kerf; in Europe a common near size is 600 × 1200 mm.
What is a half sheet of plywood?
A half sheet is a nominal half of a full sheet: either the 4x4 format (1220 × 1220 mm) or the 2x8 format (610 × 2440 mm). Agree the finished dimensions separately, allowing for saw kerf and trimming.
How much does a 4x4 sheet of plywood weigh?
An 18 mm 1220 × 1220 mm half sheet weighs about 13.4 kg on a white Styrax core and about 17.4 kg on Eucalyptus. At 12 mm on Styrax it weighs about 8.9 kg.
Can you get plywood in 6x3 or 3x8?
Yes, cut to size. A 6x3 (1830 × 915 mm) or 3x8 (915 × 2440 mm) panel comes from a 4x8 sheet with a strip left over, so plan the cutting list to use that strip or choose a custom parent size.
Is a 4x6 plywood sheet a standard size?
No, 4x6 (1220 × 1830 mm) is a cut-to-size format. From a 1220 × 2440 mm parent, the remaining strip is undersized after saw kerf; a full 4x6 plus a full 2x4 needs a larger parent.
What is the minimum order for cut-to-size plywood?
One 40HC container, with mixed sizes, thicknesses and specifications by agreement. Each finished size is listed with its piece quantity.
How accurate are factory-cut small panels?
Length and width are held to ±2 mm, and sanded furniture-panel thickness down to ±0.2 mm.
What thicknesses are available in 4x4 and 2x4 panels?
Any thickness in our 3–40 mm range. Small panels are most often ordered in 3–6 mm for backs and crafts, 9–12 mm for shelving and boxes, and 15–18 mm for furniture parts and worktops.
