1/8 lauan plywood 4x8 price: how 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm sheets are priced

Updated
Request a Quote

A 1/8 lauan plywood 4x8 price is set per cubic metre at the mill, then divided by sheets: a 3 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm holds 0.00893 m³, so 112 sheets make one cubic metre. Minh Thanh Plywood's starting prices in October 2026 were US$250/m³ for commercial and US$350/m³ for furniture plywood, and thin sheets price above them. At mill level that is about US$2.2 to US$3.1 FOB for one 3 mm (1/8 in) sheet before freight and duty, against about US$17 for a 1/8 in lauan panel at a US home centre.

How much is a 1/8 in lauan plywood 4x8 sheet in the US?

A 1/8 in lauan or utility 4 × 8 ft panel sold in a US home centre cost about $16.98 at Home Depot in August 2026, per ThePricer, and $23 at a specialist yard (Goosebay Lumber); 1/4 in sheets listed at $15.55 to $28. Retail is roughly five to ten times the factory price per sheet, because retail carries freight, duty, the dealer’s stock and margin.

At the mill, a 3 mm sheet is the same volume of wood: US$250/m³ divided by 112 sheets is about US$2.2 per sheet, and US$350/m³ about US$3.1, as raw FOB examples before freight and duty. Container buyers use that gap; see the sheets-per-m³ table below.

Nominal US size Actual thickness Metric reference
1/8 in utility panel 0.106 in, about 2.7 mm 3 mm
1/4 in PureBond birch 0.188 in, about 4.8 mm 5 mm
1/4 in Sandeply 0.205 in, about 5.2 mm 5 or 6 mm

Next sizes up in the US underlayment range are 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 in lauan, such as the interior non-warranted underlayment Toledo Plywood lists.

Questions buyers ask about the 1/8 in panel:

  • Can it curve, for an RV ceiling? It bends to gentle curves along the face grain, but it is not a purpose-made bending sheet; a tight radius needs flexible plywood.
  • Is it marine grade? No. It is interior bonded; marine grade needs a water-resistant glue line.
  • Can it be a shelf? Only fully supported on a frame; for a loaded shelf use thicker plywood.
  • Floor underlayment? Use 1/4 in or thicker for floors.

What sets the 1/8 lauan plywood 4x8 price?

A 1/8 lauan plywood 4x8 sheet is priced per cubic metre at the mill and converted to a sheet price by its volume. That is why two quotes that look different per sheet can be the same price per m³, and why the thickness you write on the order changes the sheet price at once.

One eighth of an inch is 3.175 mm. Export mills make the nearest metric thickness, 3 mm, on a 1220 × 2440 mm sheet, the metric 4x8 size. The table converts each thin thickness into volume per sheet and sheets per cubic metre.

Thickness Inch reference Volume per 1220 × 2440 mm sheet Sheets per m³
3 mm about 1/8 in 0.00893 m³ 112
4 mm about 5/32 in 0.01191 m³ 84
5 mm about 3/16 in 0.01488 m³ 67
6 mm about 1/4 in 0.01786 m³ 56

The FOB price of one sheet is the price per m³ divided by the sheets per m³. Freight, insurance and import duty are then added per container and spread over its sheets. Our plywood price guide explains the same method for every thickness.

Thin plywood price conversion: volume per 1220 x 2440 mm sheet and sheets per cubic metre for 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm

What do thin plywood sheets cost from a Vietnamese mill in 2026?

In October 2026, Minh Thanh Plywood’s indicative starting prices were US$250/m³ for commercial plywood and US$350/m³ for furniture and interior plywood, FOB Hai Phong. Thin sheets of 3 to 6 mm price above those starting points per cubic metre, because a cubic metre of thin plywood takes more work and more face veneer.

A starting price is a floor, not a quote. The final price depends on seven inputs: face, core, glue, thickness, size, quantity and delivery term. We publish no price list, because a price without those seven inputs describes no real panel.

To turn a quote into a sheet price, use the sheets-per-m³ column above. A quote per m³ for 4 mm plywood divided by 84 gives the price of one 4mm plywood 8x4 sheet; divided by 67 for 5 mm and by 56 for 6 mm. The plywood price by thickness guide compares thicker sheets on the same basis.

Why does thin plywood cost more per cubic metre than 18 mm plywood?

Thin plywood costs more per cubic metre because each cubic metre contains more sheets, more glue lines and more face area. The mill is paid for work per sheet, while the buyer compares price per m³.

The numbers show the gap. A cubic metre of 3 mm plywood is 112 sheets with 4 glue lines each, 448 glue lines in total. A cubic metre of 18 mm plywood is about 18.7 sheets; with 11 plies and 10 glue lines each, that is about 187 glue lines. The 3 mm cubic metre also has 224 faces to sand and grade, against about 37 for 18 mm.

Three more costs sit on thin sheets:

  • Face veneer share. Two faces make up a large share of a 3 mm sheet’s volume, and face veneer is the most expensive layer.
  • Scarce premium veneer. Premium thin veneer is scarce, so 4 mm furniture sheets can take longer to produce. Minh Thanh does not lower the standard to go faster.
  • Handling. Thin sheets are graded, stacked and packed one by one, so labour per m³ rises.

Thin plywood comparison: 112 three-millimetre sheets, 448 glue lines and 224 faces per cubic metre.

Which price drivers matter most for 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm plywood?

For thin plywood, the face and the tolerance move the price most, because the face is a large share of the sheet and a thin panel shows every core defect. The table lists what each driver changes and what to write on your enquiry.

Price driver What changes the price What to write on the order
Face and back Species, grade, colour match; one good face or two e.g. okoume face, bintangor back
Core White Styrax or Eucalyptus core, veneer grade Core species and grade
Glue and emission UF at E0, MR/melamine-fortified or phenolic (WBP) bond Glue type and emission class
Thickness and tolerance Sanded ±0.2–0.3 mm or commercial ±0.5 mm Nominal thickness and tolerance
Size 1220 × 2440, 1250 × 2500 mm or custom; cut-to-size Sheet size or part sizes
Quantity One 40HC minimum; mixed loads by agreement Sheets per specification
Delivery term FOB Hai Phong, CFR or CIF Port of destination

Glue and emission are two separate lines. For US-regulated hardwood plywood, 40 CFR 770.10 specifies a formaldehyde emission limit of 0.05 ppm for veneer-core or composite-core hardwood plywood. Minh Thanh’s furniture panels use UF glue at E0 emission as standard. US buyers can check the emission rule on the EPA formaldehyde standards page (TSCA Title VI, checked October 2026).

Lauan and meranti faces vs bintangor and okoume: which thin face fits the price?

Lauan is the trade name for light red meranti (Shorea species), a Southeast Asian hardwood long used for thin underlayment and door skins. Bintangor and okoume are the faces Vietnamese mills more often lay on thin export plywood today, and they fill the same uses at a comparable look.

Face Wood and origin Look Typical thin-sheet use
Lauan / meranti Shorea species, Southeast Asia Pink to red-brown, coarse open grain Underlayment, door skins, crafts
Bintangor Calophyllum species, Southeast Asia Reddish-brown, interlocked grain Door skins, commercial backs, paint-grade parts
Okoume Aucoumea klaineana, Central Africa Pinkish-brown, smooth, light Furniture backs, door skins, decorative parts
Poplar Plantation poplar Pale cream, even Paint-grade and laminated parts
Birch Imported birch veneer Pale, fine grain Visible furniture parts, crafts

A bintangor face is usually the cost-effective option for a reddish thin sheet. An okoume face costs more and gives a smoother, more even surface. Read what lauan plywood is for the species group and the panels that replace it, and see our okoume plywood and bintangor plywood pages for the faces we lay.

How are 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm and 6 mm plywood built?

Minh Thanh’s thin plywood is 5-ply in every thickness from 3 to 5 mm. The build differs inside, and the build is part of the price.

  1. 3 mm: one core veneer, two cross-band veneers and two face veneers.
  2. 4 mm: three core veneers and two faces; a 4 mm furniture panel, for example, uses three 1.3 mm Styrax core veneers.
  3. 5 mm: three core veneers and two faces, with the core veneer thickness adjusted to the panel. At 6 mm, the ply count is confirmed with the order.

Five plies keep a thin sheet balanced, so it lies flat on the cutting table. Cores are white Styrax or Eucalyptus, and every sheet is dried to 8–12 % moisture before dispatch. A 3-ply thin sheet at a lower price is a different build, so compare the ply count before you compare the price. Our thin plywood page shows the full range.

3 mm plywood build: face, cross-band, core, cross-band and back veneer

What changes between a 3mm plywood 8x4 price and a 4mm plywood 8x4 price?

A 4mm plywood 8x4 sheet holds a third more wood than a 3 mm sheet, 0.01191 m³ against 0.00893 m³, so its sheet price is about a third higher at the same price per m³. The build changes too: 3 mm uses one core and two cross-bands, 4 mm uses three core veneers.

Three points decide which to buy:

  • Stiffness. A 4 mm panel spans a wider drawer bottom or cabinet back without sagging.
  • Lead time. Premium thin veneer for 4 mm furniture sheets is scarce, so 4 mm can take longer than 3 mm.
  • Fit. A groove cut for 1/8 in or 3 mm will not take 4 mm. Check the joint before you change thickness.

For a 5mm plywood 8x4 price the same rule applies: 0.01488 m³ per sheet, 67 sheets per cubic metre.

What are thin plywood sheets used for, and how does the use change the price?

Thin plywood of 3 to 6 mm goes into door skins, cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, crafts, laser cutting, packaging and underlayment. Each use needs a different face and tolerance, and that sets most of the price.

  • Door skins: a smooth, paint- or stain-ready face such as okoume or bintangor, tight thickness.
  • Cabinet backs and drawer bottoms: a sound face on the visible side, an economical back.
  • Crafts and laser cutting: an even core with no voids and a flat sheet.
  • Packaging and crates: commercial or packing grade, ±0.5–1.0 mm, the most cost-effective build.
  • Underlayment: a flat, sanded sheet; the core matters more than the face.

Paying for a furniture face on a crate panel wastes money. Paying for a packing build on a door skin costs more in rejects.

How much do thin plywood sheets weigh, and how many fit in a 40HC?

On a white Styrax core, a 1220 × 2440 × 3 mm sheet weighs about 4.5 kg, and a 40HC takes about 5,994 sheets in 18 packs of 333. The table gives the Minh Thanh 40HC plan for each thin thickness, using the Styrax reference density of 500 kg/m³ and packs about 1,000 mm high.

Thickness Sheets per pack Sheets per 40HC Weight per sheet Panel volume Panel weight
3 mm 333 5,994 4.5 kg 53.5 m³ 26,764 kg
4 mm 250 4,500 6.0 kg 53.6 m³ 26,791 kg
5 mm 200 3,600 7.4 kg 53.6 m³ 26,791 kg
6 mm 166 2,988 8.9 kg 53.4 m³ 26,684 kg

Every row stays under the 28,000 kg planning payload with room for packing. If your booking carries less, the sheet count is reduced to fit. Freight is paid per container, so freight per sheet is lowest at 3 mm. See container loading for how packs are placed.

Three-millimetre Styrax plywood: 18 packs, 5,994 sheets and 26,764 kg panel weight per 40HC.

How does thickness tolerance affect the thin plywood price?

Tolerance matters more on thin plywood, because the same ±0.5 mm is about 17 % of a 3 mm sheet but only about 3 % of an 18 mm sheet. A tighter tolerance needs calibrated veneer and sanding, which adds cost.

Minh Thanh holds sanded furniture panels to ±0.2–0.3 mm, down to ±0.2 mm, and commercial panels to ±0.5 mm. Packing plywood runs ±0.5–1.0 mm. Length and width stay within ±2 mm.

Specify the tolerance your joint needs. A door skin glued to a frame needs the sanded tolerance; a crate side does not.

How do you compare thin plywood quotes?

Compare thin plywood quotes on the same build and the same basis, then convert each to a price per m³. Follow these steps:

  1. Fix the build: face and back species and grade, core, ply count, glue and emission class.
  2. Fix the thickness and tolerance: 3 mm ±0.2 mm is a different product from 3 mm ±0.5 mm.
  3. Fix the size: 1220 × 2440 mm, 1250 × 2500 mm or cut-to-size parts.
  4. Convert every quote to US$/m³: multiply a sheet price by the sheets per m³ from the first table.
  5. Put all quotes on one delivery term: FOB, CFR or CIF to the same port.
  6. Check the sample: count the plies at the edge, measure thickness at the corners and the centre.

A quote that is low per sheet is often a thinner actual sheet, a 3-ply build or a packing-grade core. The 4x8 plywood price guide applies the same checks to thicker sheets.

What this means for your order

To get a firm thin plywood price, send one line per specification: thickness, size, face/back, core, glue and emission, tolerance, quantity and destination port.

Example: 4 mm, 1220 × 2440 mm, okoume face / bintangor back, white Styrax core, UF glue at E0 emission, ±0.2 mm, one 40HC, CIF Rotterdam. For export packaging, the IPPC’s ISPM 15 standard excludes wood packaging made from processed wood such as plywood; raw-wood pallets and dunnage require separate consideration.

Minh Thanh’s minimum order is one 40HC, with mixed specifications by agreement. Production takes 15–45 days after the 30% deposit, with the 70% balance against the scanned bill of lading. Free samples go out with the quotation; send your specification to contact@minhthanhplywood.com.

Buyer questions, answered

What is the price of 1/8 lauan plywood 4x8?

Mills price 1/8 lauan plywood per cubic metre, and a 3 mm sheet of 1220 × 2440 mm is 0.00893 m³, about 112 sheets per m³. Divide the quoted price per m³ by 112 for the FOB price of one sheet, then add freight and duty for your landed cost.

How many 3 mm plywood sheets are in one cubic metre?

About 112 sheets of 1220 × 2440 × 3 mm make one cubic metre. At 4 mm it is 84 sheets, at 5 mm 67 sheets and at 6 mm 56 sheets.

Why is thin plywood more expensive per cubic metre?

A cubic metre of 3 mm plywood has more glue lines, more faces to sand and more sheets to grade and pack than a cubic metre of 18 mm plywood. Premium thin face veneer is also scarce, so the face costs more per sheet volume.

What is the cheapest thin plywood face?

A commercial hardwood face such as bintangor or a utility-grade face over a commercial core is usually the most cost-effective choice for hidden parts. Furniture faces such as birch, okoume or a selected poplar cost more.

Is 4mm plywood much more expensive than 3mm plywood?

Per sheet, 4 mm holds a third more wood than 3 mm, so it costs more per sheet. Per cubic metre the two are close; 4 mm can take longer to produce because premium thin veneer is scarce.

What is the minimum order for thin plywood from Vietnam?

Minh Thanh's minimum order is one 40HC container, and thin sheets can share it with other specifications by agreement. A 40HC on Styrax core takes about 5,994 sheets of 3 mm plywood.

Can I get thin plywood cut to size?

Yes. Minh Thanh supplies cut-to-size plywood, including one panel cut into 4, 6 or 8 pieces, which suits door skins, drawer bottoms and craft blanks.

Does the price include CARB P2 or TSCA Title VI compliance?

Minh Thanh's furniture panels are made with UF glue at E0 emission and the factory holds CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI certification, so US-compliant thin plywood is a standard build, not an upgrade.

How much is a 1/8 in 4x8 lauan plywood sheet in the US?

A 1/8 in lauan utility panel cost about $16.98 at Home Depot in August 2026 and $23 at a specialist yard. At the mill the same 3 mm sheet is about US$2.2 to US$3.1 FOB before freight and duty.

Are samples of thin plywood free?

Yes, Minh Thanh sends free samples. Ask for the exact face, core and thickness you plan to order so the sample matches the quote.
