White plywood is any plywood sheet that looks white: a naturally pale face such as poplar over a white core, a bleached face, or a white surface of melamine, HPL, film or paint. Each suits different work. Minh Thanh Plywood makes the first kind in Phu Tho, Vietnam: poplar faces on a white Styrax core, white through the edge.
White plywood or white ply wood: three ways a sheet is white
White plywood is a sheet that looks white, but three very different panels are sold under that name. Merchants list it as white plywood, white ply wood or white plyboard; knowing which panel a supplier means is the first step of any order.
| Kind of white | What makes it white | Finish the buyer adds | Typical uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural pale face | Poplar or birch face, often on a white core | Paint, lacquer, laminate or none | Furniture, drawers, crafts, packaging |
| Bleached face | A natural face lightened with a bleach | Clear lacquer or a white stain | Decorative panels where the grain shows |
| White surface | Melamine paper, HPL, film or paint | None | Kitchen and wardrobe interiors, shop fittings, signs |
A natural pale face is a wood face: it takes any finish and shows the grain. A white surface is a finished panel: it is washable and uniform, but the wood is hidden. A bleached face sits between them.
Minh Thanh Plywood makes the natural kind: poplar faces on a white Styrax core, sanded and ready for the buyer’s own finish.

What wood is white plywood made of?
Natural white plywood is made with a pale face, most often poplar, and a pale core. Poplar is a light hardwood with a creamy white colour and little visible figure, so it looks white once sanded. Birch is also pale, but warmer and with more grain.
The core decides whether the white goes all the way through. A dark or mixed core shows as a brown stripe on every cut edge. A white Styrax core keeps the edge pale, which matters for exposed edges, drawers and furniture parts that are not edged.
- Poplar face, white Styrax core: white face and white edge. The whitest natural panel.
- Poplar face, eucalyptus core: white face, light reddish edge. Stiffer and heavier.
- Birch face: pale face, warmer tone; graded D+, D and E in Vietnam.
At Minh Thanh Plywood, furniture panels use white Styrax or eucalyptus cores as standard. See our poplar plywood page.
Is white plywood the same as white oak plywood?
No: white oak plywood is plywood with a face veneer of white oak, a light brown wood with a strong grain. The name comes from the species, white oak, not from the colour of the sheet.
“White plywood” means a sheet that looks white: a pale poplar or birch face, a bleached face or a white surface. A buyer who searches for one and finds the other ends up with the wrong look. Write the face species on the order, not only the colour.
For oak and other hardwood faces, see our guide to oak and hardwood veneered plywood.
Poplar-faced white plywood: grades and what each shows
Poplar-faced white plywood is graded face and back separately, as A/A, A/B and B/B. Buyers also order by the Chinese codes B/BB, BB/CC and CP, which map onto the same ladder. The approved sample fixes the grade: the mill matches the sample for every lot.
- A/A: two clean faces, for parts seen from both sides: open shelves, doors, exposed partitions.
- A/B: one clean face, for cabinet sides, backs seen from the front and drawer bottoms.
- B/B: both faces for painting or laminating, where small marks are covered.
Natural poplar varies a little in tone from cream to light grey-green, and can carry fine mineral streaks. For a clear-finished white panel, the A face should be sorted for even tone. For a painted panel, B/B is enough and costs less.

Styrax core: why the white goes through the edge
A Styrax core is white, light and even, which makes it the core of choice for white plywood. Its reference density is 500 kg/m³, against 650 kg/m³ for eucalyptus, so a white Styrax-core sheet is the lightest furniture panel we make.
| Core (1220 × 2440 × 18 mm) | Edge colour | Sheet weight | Sheets per 40HC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Styrax | White | 26.8 kg | 990 |
| Acacia | Light brown | 31.1 kg | 880 |
| Eucalyptus | Light reddish | 34.8 kg | 795 |
The lighter core also fits more cubic metres in a container: about 53 m³ of 18 mm Styrax-core panels against 43 m³ on eucalyptus. Core layers are stitched both horizontally and vertically, so the white edge shows no open joints when it is cut. Our guide to lightweight plywood compares light cores in detail.

Bleached plywood faces
A bleached plywood face is a natural veneer lightened with a wood bleach, so that a pale or medium face turns whiter while the grain still shows. Bleaching is done by the panel maker or by the finisher before lacquering.
Bleached faces are chosen for decorative interiors that want a Scandinavian-white wood look, with grain visible under a clear finish. The bleach must be neutralised and the face dried before lacquer, or the finish can lift or discolour.
Minh Thanh Plywood supplies natural poplar faces, sanded and polished; bleaching is a finishing step for the buyer or the finisher. A pale poplar face needs less bleach to reach a white look than a darker face.
White surfaces: melamine, HPL, film and paint
A white surface turns any plywood into a finished white panel. The plywood under it gives the strength and screw holding; the surface gives the colour and the wear resistance.
- White melamine paper: pressed on, washable, for cabinet interiors and shelving.
- White HPL: high-pressure laminate, harder, for worktops, doors and shop fittings.
- White film: a phenolic or other film for signs, vehicle linings and some formwork.
- White paint or primer: factory-primed or painted faces, ready for a top coat.
These are finished panels, made by laminators and coaters on a plywood base; the table below lists them. What they need from the plywood is a flat, sanded, even face: any dent or core gap shows through a white gloss surface. Minh Thanh panels are sanded and polished, and both faces are UV-ready for buyers who apply their own UV coating.
White-faced plywood specifications at a glance
Buyers asking for “plywood white” often want a finished white panel. These are the white-surface panels that retailers list, with the base plywood each sits on, so the order names the same lines.
| White panel | Typical thickness | Sides | Core | Retail pack or note | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| White melamine plywood | 12, 18 and 24 mm | Both sides | Birch or poplar veneer core | Pack of 33 at 12 mm, 22 at 18 mm (Plyonline); cut to ±1 mm at Cutmy | Cabinet interiors, shelving, shop fittings |
| White HPL plywood, exterior | 18 mm | Both sides | Poplar or birch veneer | 1220 × 2440 mm, exterior-bonded (EXT) | Worktops, doors, wet areas |
| White film-faced birch | 12 and 18 mm | Both sides | Birch, 9 plies at 12 mm and 13 plies at 18 mm | Exterior-bonded at 18 mm | Signs, vehicle linings, formwork |
| UV white prefinished plywood | 18 mm | Two sides | Hardwood veneer core, 4 ft × 8 ft | Ready to install (Home Depot) | Cabinet boxes, drawers, closets |
Minh Thanh Plywood supplies the base panel under all four: sanded and polished poplar-faced plywood on a white Styrax core, in 12, 15 and 18 mm among its 3–40 mm range, 1220 × 2440 mm, with both faces UV-ready. The white melamine, HPL, film or UV coat is applied by the buyer’s laminator or coater on that base, which keeps the colour, gloss and edge finish under the buyer’s control.
For Jordan and the wider Middle East, the panel is 1220 × 2440 mm with UF glue at E0 emission, quoted CIF to Aqaba or another Middle East port. Sea transit from Hai Phong is 15–25 days, and the terms are a 30% deposit with the 70% balance against the scanned B/L.
Which white plywood suits packaging, crafts or furniture?
Choose white plywood by the job the white face has to do. This decision runs from the use to the panel:
- Retail packaging and display boxes: a natural poplar face, B/B, light Styrax core. Clean, light and low-cost.
- Crafts, laser cutting and model making: poplar A/B on a white core, thin sheets. Clean edges after cutting.
- Painted furniture: poplar B/B or A/B, sanded at the mill, on Styrax or eucalyptus core.
- Clear-finished white furniture: poplar A/A sorted for even tone, or a bleached face.
- Kitchen and wardrobe interiors: white melamine or HPL on plywood.
- Signs and shop fittings: white HPL or film on plywood.

White plywood sheet sizes, thicknesses and tolerance
White poplar plywood is made from thin panels to thick furniture boards. Minh Thanh Plywood makes 3–40 mm in 1220 × 2440 mm and 1250 × 2500 mm sheets, plus custom sizes such as 1220 × 2500 mm and 1220 × 2280 mm.
- 3–5 mm: always 5-ply; for drawer bottoms, backs, crafts and packaging.
- 9–12 mm: drawer sides, light shelves, partitions.
- 15–18 mm: carcasses, shelves and doors; an 18 mm furniture panel is 11–13 plies.
Sanded furniture panels are held to ±0.2–0.3 mm, down to ±0.2 mm; length and width to ±2 mm. Furniture-grade panels are pressed twice: the core board is pressed and calibrated, then the poplar faces are pressed on. That calibrated core keeps a white face flat under paint or laminate.
How do you whitewash plywood?
Whitewashing gives a pale wood face a white tint while the grain still shows. Work in this order:
- Sand the face smooth with fine paper, along the grain.
- Remove the dust with a vacuum and a tack cloth.
- Thin white paint with water, or use a ready whitewash stain.
- Brush it on along the grain, one section at a time.
- Wipe back the excess with a cloth before it dries, so the grain shows through.
- Let it dry, then add a second coat for a whiter look.
- Seal it with a clear water-based lacquer, which stays clear and does not yellow as much as oil.
A pale poplar face needs fewer coats than a darker face to reach a white look. Our guide how to paint plywood covers primers and full painted finishes.

How do you clean and care for white plywood?
Clean white plywood by its surface. A sealed, painted or laminated face wipes clean; a bare wood face needs gentle care.
- Laminated or painted faces: a damp cloth with mild soap, then dry.
- Lacquered wood faces: a damp, well-wrung cloth; no abrasive cleaners.
- Bare faces: dust with a dry cloth; sand out marks lightly instead of scrubbing.
- Edges: seal them, because water enters plywood through the end grain.
Natural pale faces darken slowly with light, as all wood does. A clear water-based or UV-cured lacquer slows the change; a white paint or laminate keeps its colour.
Glue, emission and moisture for white furniture plywood
White furniture plywood is an interior panel, so the glue and emission class matter as much as the colour. Minh Thanh’s standard bond for furniture and interior panels is UF glue at E0 emission; MR and phenolic (WBP) bonds are made to the customer’s specification. The bond classes are defined in EN 314-2, and the panel type for dry, humid or exterior use in EN 636.
For the US, panels must meet CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI. Minh Thanh Plywood is certified under ICTT mill no. 23024. Six ASTM D6007 chamber tests between April 2025 and June 2026 averaged 0.014–0.032 ppm. The limit for veneer-core hardwood plywood is 0.05 ppm under EPA’s TSCA Title VI emission standards. For Europe, testing to EN 717-1 or another method is arranged through SGS on request.
Veneers and finished panels are dried to 8–12 % moisture content at dispatch, the normal range for furniture plywood. A dry, stable panel keeps a white paint or laminate face free of cracks at the joints.
How to order white plywood
A white plywood order is complete when it names the kind of white, not only the colour. Write these lines:
- Kind of white: natural poplar face, or a surface you will add.
- Face and back: poplar A/A, A/B or B/B (or B/BB, BB/CC, CP), matched to an approved sample.
- Core: white Styrax for a white edge and low weight, or eucalyptus for stiffness.
- Glue and emission: UF at E0; MR or phenolic if the part sees moisture; CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI for the US.
- Thickness and tolerance: for example 18 mm ±0.2 mm.
- Size: 1220 × 2440 mm, 1250 × 2500 mm, custom or cut-to-size.
- Sanding: sanded and polished; UV-ready if you coat the faces.
- Packing and quantity: sheets per pack, packs, container and port.

Buyer questions, answered
What is white plywood?
Plywood that looks white: a naturally pale face such as poplar or birch, a bleached face, or a white surface such as melamine, HPL, film or paint. Ask which kind a supplier means, because they suit different uses.
What wood is white plywood made of?
Natural white plywood is usually poplar-faced, sometimes birch or another pale hardwood. In Vietnam the whitest panels combine a poplar face with a white Styrax core, so the edge is pale as well.
Is white plywood the same as white oak plywood?
No. White oak plywood has a face veneer of white oak, a light brown wood with a strong grain. White plywood means a white-looking face of any species, or a white surface layer.
Is white plywood good for furniture?
Yes. Poplar-faced plywood on a white Styrax core is light, flat and takes paint, lacquer and laminate well, so it is used for painted furniture, drawers, cabinet interiors and shelving.
How do you whitewash plywood?
Sand the face smooth, wipe off the dust, brush on thinned white paint or a whitewash stain along the grain, wipe back the excess with a cloth so the grain shows, and seal it with a clear water-based lacquer.
How do you clean white plywood?
Wipe a sealed or laminated face with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it. Keep water off bare faces and edges, and sand out marks on an unsealed face rather than scrubbing.
Does white plywood turn yellow?
Pale natural faces darken slowly with light, as all wood does. A clear water-based or UV-cured lacquer slows the change; a white paint, melamine or HPL face keeps its colour.
What is white faced plywood?
Plywood with a white surface layer, such as white melamine paper, white HPL, white film or factory primer. It is a finished panel; a pale poplar face is a natural wood face that the buyer finishes.
What grades does white poplar plywood come in?
Poplar faces are quoted as face/back pairs A/A, A/B and B/B, matched to the approved sample. Buyers also order by the Chinese codes B/BB, BB/CC and CP, which map onto the same ladder.
Can white plywood be used outdoors?
Only with an exterior bond and a full finish. A pale face greys and weathers outside, so outdoor white plywood is painted or overlaid, with every edge sealed.
How heavy is white Styrax-core plywood?
A 1220 × 2440 × 18 mm sheet weighs about 26.8 kg on a Styrax core, at a reference density of 500 kg/m³, against 34.8 kg on eucalyptus.
